My Pecious Child

The greatest gift we will ever know
is a child, born to love and grow.
Conception is a miracle in itself;
the start of new life and good health.

Such a treasure your precious child is,
who will thrive on every hug and kiss.
Hold them close and sing them songs;
they will only be a child for so long.

They may not always smell pure and sweet,
a dirty diaper or a dampened sheet.
But with a loving cuddle and a beautiful smile,
the joys of parenthood are all worth while.

"Thank you Lord for our precious child."

(c) Lisa Runstedler All Rights Reserved

Return of the Frog Prince by Jim Dott

There came a night with air so parched,
my breath rattled like dry leaves.
A great drought was upon the land,
all that was green had shriveled and fallen,
springs had ceased their flow,
and the rivers had sunk beneath their beds.
I longed for my old life,
for water against my skin.

That night I saw how the royal household-
my plotting brothers, my unquenchable queen,
the courtesans, courtiers, the hangers-on,
and I, ‘the-king-who-was-once-frog;
had boiled our abundant lands, our loyal people,
had distilled and distilled them
so we could spend our days in games of war, and each night
drink well-vinted wine from silver goblets, eat ambrosial sweets on plates of gold,
and entwine with our lovers on the smoothest silks.
We had cooked our kingdom down
until the pot was dry.

And what of my beautiful bride?
the princess, who broke the spell,
throwing me against her chamber wall
when I begged to enter her bed,
by then, her beauty only bored me,
her heart had long since wandered, as had mine,
--I’d lost count of the knaves who’d cuckolded me,
her ardent heat that had set me aflame
then only choked and desiccated me.

That night, without farewells, I took to the dusty road
and found the wood where the old witch dwelled,
the one who had cast me into amphibious ways.
I told her I wanted to leave the dry world,
begged her to make me frog again.
She laughed, said she knew I would come,
said, “this time there is no changing back,”
and led me to the well, its dark eye winking with stars,
she tossed aside my crown, stripped me of my robes, drew off my boots.
”No go,” she said.
I stepped in, sank down into the dark,
the cool wet washing me,
I felt the webs begin to grow between fingers, toes,
felt the green soaking my skin.
I had returned to my old kingdom,
ready to be reborn in the womb of water.

**fairytale**

Once upon a time there was a young prince who lived in a magnificent castle. This castle was like a fortress, with many great windows high up in the turrets. From his tower on the eastern side of the castle the prince would watch the sun rise over his father’s kingdom, and contemplate on how one day, all this land and all these responsibilities would be his.

But the prince was dissatisfied, and he yearned for something more. He wanted adventure; to see the many wonderful creatures of the world, and magical beings he had been told of as a child. As a young boy he had begged his father to let him ride further out into the country whilst on hunting expeditions, but always his father had said no, and firmly ordered him to stay within the boundaries of his land. He warned him of the dangers of the outside world, for he, too, had been a keen adventurer in his youth, but had not travelled outside the borders of the land for over ten years, when during his last expedition he had returned with horrible, scarring burns on his face and chest. He spoke of the lands beyond with fear and reproach.

Time passed and still the prince dreamt of different lands. It was in his twenty-second year that he decided to act upon his dreams. One day he ordered a secret council with three of his most trusted friends. One was a blacksmith: short and stout, yet strong as an ox. His knowledge of weaponry was unmatched, and he brought with him blades and axes made of the finest metals. The second was an archer. His slender, willowy frame reminded the prince of young sapling trees on the outskirts of the forest: gentle yet resilient. This archer had a keen eye, and knew the surrounding woods and meadows well. The third person the prince chose to enlist was a stable boy. The boy was an orphan, and no one knew from whence he came. The king had discovered him thirteen winters ago, as a baby, left sleeping on the forest floor. He was small and seemingly frail, and he walked with a slight limp. However, he seemed to understand the horses like no other, and he was a competent rider.

The prince explained to them all his desire to venture out into the greater world, and requested they accompany him. The blacksmith agreed to go, for his wife had died in childbirth two winters ago, and he felt he no longer had any ties to this land. The archer too seemed keen to travel with the prince, for he had grown weary of scouting the same forests and meadows surrounding the kingdom. It was only the stable boy who spoke of the lands beyond with trepidation, but he said this was only because of the stories he had heard from other youngsters in the village. Eventually, he too agreed to join the men in their quest.

That night, in secret, they set off out into the vast forest. The stable boy chose four valiant and reliable steeds for himself and his companions. The prince rode atop a sleek, black stallion. The horse was practically invisible, as his velvet coat, the colour of midnight, became one with the shadows of the night air. The blacksmith rode a strong horse, whose coat was the colour of chestnuts as they gleam in the autumn sun. His footsteps were heavy, but sure and true. The archer rode a slim horse, as pale in complexion as he was. The steed was dappled with light grey markings, the pattern of moonlight breaking through the roof of the forest on a clear, still night. This horse was swift and silent, and if you saw it flit past you in the night, you would swear you had seen a ghost. Last there came the stable boy, riding a small and steadfast pony, who was short-legged and grey-blue like the dusk.

They travelled for seven days and seven nights, and rode far beyond the boundaries of the King’s lands. In the evenings they would set up camp before darkness fell. They would drink ale, and eat bread and salty meat, and sing songs of adventure and heroism. The young stable boy kept a campfire going all night, and seemed to need little sleep. He constantly complained of being cold. His fingers were like frosty spider’s legs, and neither gloves nor fire could keep him warm.

Eventually the trail they had been following through the woods grew thin. The blacksmith had to dismount from his horse and lead the way, taking swings at the undergrowth in front with his axe, to ensure an easier passage for the other members of the party. Deeper and deeper into the dark forest they pushed, the blacksmith cutting a path, and the archer darting back and forth on his light-hoofed steed, keeping a keen eye trained on the surrounding trees.

After an arduous journey, the group came across a clearing in the woods. Their horses came to rest at the edge of a steep embankment that led down into a beautiful valley. Even in the moonlight they could see how the grass there glimmered emerald green, and even in the deafening silence of the dark, they could still hear the breeze faintly whispering names long forgotten.

They carefully descended the knoll and rode in almost complete quiet through the grassy vale. They rode onwards for several miles in the dark, until a faint illumination in the distance could be seen. His curiosity roused, the prince pulled away from the group and began to ride towards the dim light at a much faster pace. His strong sturdy horse by far outmatched the others in both strength and stamina. The blacksmith’s horse was true but slow, and could not match the pace. The archer’s horse initially equalled the speed of the price’s steed, however he could not keep up with him over the distance, and soon he lagged behind. And the stable boy’s pony could never have kept up, so instead he opted to plod along behind the blacksmith.

The prince felt himself drawn to the distant glow in front of him. He rode onwards at a frightening pace, urging his stallion on, his brow furrowed as they swept through the dark and lengthy grass, a silhouette prince on a shadow steed. Eventually, the prince came upon the source of the mysterious light. He looked up to see a fabulous castle before him. It was a hundred times bigger than even his father’s grand castle, and nowhere before had he seen architecture that could match the impressive beauty of what lay before him. The multitude of turrets wound their way up into the sky, disappearing amongst the clouds, like great spindly arms reaching up to break the through the sky like a drowning man reaches up to break through the surface of the water.

From within the castle came a strange, melodious music. All the windows and doorways were opened, and the peculiar radiance beamed from within. The prince dismounted, landing softly in the dewy meadow, and approached the drawbridge. He expected resistance, or at least a watchman on duty to query his arrival in this strange land. But there was nothing… only the faint sound of music, and the eerie light that shone from within.

Cautiously, he set foot on the drawbridge, and entered the castle.

The room he entered was huge. He had never seen anything like it. The ceilings seemed to go up to the sky. So high were they that he couldn’t make out the details at the tops of the pillars, or the pictures painted there. In this room there were hundreds upon hundreds of people dancing. They moved soundlessly to the strange music, and when they spoke, their lips moved slowly and no audible sound came out. He could see through them… it was as if they weren’t there. But they were, right in front of him, these transparent figures, all gentle smiles and footsteps that echoed silence. And inside each and every one of them, he could see a little burning ball of light. It was like a firefly, and there, against the bluish hue of each of their translucent bodies and elegant robes, he could see it. Flitting about, like it wanted to escape, like it was trapped.

Upon his first arrival at the castle the prince had felt a sense of awe and calm at the beauty before him. But now he felt an unpleasant sensation building within him that he couldn’t quite describe, for he had never felt this way before, and he looked around at the figures in the room with an expression verging on disdain. He wondered if any of them dreamed of adventure, or if they had been here all their lives, and always would be. And he felt a pang for those little burning butterflies, dancing like tethered stars inside the hollow bodies, whilst their hosts danced and smiled politely for all eternity.

The prince walked through the ballroom, occasionally touching a fingertip or the edge of a flowing dress as he did so. He would touch, but he would not feel anything, except for a slight shiver.

At the back of the room was a throne, set in silver and glass, and encrusted with jewels. The arms of the throne spiralled out like the wizened branches of an ancient tree, and the jewels hung from it like plump, peculiar, over ripe fruits. On the throne sat a woman. Of all the strange and fabulous sights he had seen this night, she had to be the most incredible of all. She sat up straight, her long legs pressed together and folded gracefully beneath her. Her hair was as white and straight as a sunbeam, and her eyes look as through cut from a crystal. Her long, lean fingers rested coolly on the arms of her throne. As the prince approached she shrank back a little, but he spoke to her gently and assured her that he meant her no harm, and she seemed reassured by his words.

She stood and moved towards him, this handsome stranger, the first seen in these parts for years. Her only alternative. She felt like a cold breeze between his fingertips as he rested his hands around her tiny waist, pulling her in close. His lips touched hers.

There was an almighty wail from every being in the room. They all smoothly stretched their faces into expressions of pure terror and howled in combined agony. The prince felt a burning sensation grate its way down his throat. He fell to his knees and grasped at his stomach, feeling an intense pain ripping through his system. Beside him the princess trembled, and slowly began to fade away.

He had stolen her light. But what keeps an icy princess warm will boil the blood of a mortal man. And so it did, as the prince shrieked in agony and was torn asunder, his very marrow melting, steam rising from his pores and his tongue and eyes baking, as the bauble of life light tried to escape from it’s new captor.

The building began to shake, and the turrets crumbled. Great blocks of granite and marble showered down from the skies, and the building caved in on itself with a great groaning and rumbling.

The blacksmith and archer had arrived at the gates in time to hear the fearful shrieks from within, and had seen the ghastly apparitions moaning and fading. They had also seen their prince fall, and the building begin to crumble with him. They turned their horses back and ran, in a fit of terror, back towards the forest, back home.

***

The little stable boy surveyed the destruction. He scouted around amidst the rubble, finding no trace of the people that had been there before, that the blacksmith and archer and told him about, before they fled back into the woods. But he knew they had been there. Eventually he came to the grand throne, which seemed largely untouched by the damage. Beside the throne lay the charred remains of the prince. Underneath the black ash and the smell of burnt flesh (a scent with which the boy was familiar), he could see a faint light. He dusted the pile of ash gently, until it began to disintegrate. Suddenly a little firefly of light sprang forth! It moved quickly, but the stable boy’s limp seemed forgotten, and he pounced on the renegade little light and clasped it firmly between his hands. He put his cupped hands to his mouth, threw his head back and swallowed. He rubbed his belly and gave a satisfied smile. Curling up at the base of the throne, the boy slept for the first night in thirteen years.

The past is of no importance. The present is of no importance. It is with the future that we have to deal. For the past is what man should not have been. The present is what man ought not to be. The future is what artists are.

Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot.
